I’ve been reading a romance book with Old English wording. Many words are no longer used in daily communication, but I thought they’d be fun to share with you. You might even know their meanings.
Arras – Agog – Countenance – Ebon – Emend – Gonfalons – Roweling
Two of them were familiar to me, but I checked them anyway. It does slow you down to grab the dictionary or a dictionary online but it makes for a clearer understanding.
Authors like me must have a grasp of the English language. I admire those who write in the Old English style, but sometimes I get stuck when writing words, wind up with writer’s block, and look a little like this.
At this time of year, many of you may be reflecting on Christmas. How about words found here?
What if you were shoveling your driveway or mucking out your barn at twilight and heard this: “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” (Luke 2: 14) NIV. Would you stare up at the bright light that wasn’t coming from a helicopter or a spotlight from a car dealership? Would you answer the angels or gather your neighbors and wonder at the words?
The shepherds did long ago in a town called Bethlehem. Their words, in their language, must have been surprising, maybe fear, or perhaps wonder at what was happening. Would you be curious enough to seek out what was going on?
I hope so. May the reason for Christmas touch your heart with everlasting abundant love that you can share with others not just at this time of year but for the rest of your life.
