This month I’d like to share some pointers if you are considering becoming a fiction writer.

1. You WILL need an agent if you want to be traditionally published.
2. Don’t put out a book before it’s ready. Find a critique group (not your mom or best friend), an editor, and a proofreader.
3. Be teachable. Take constructive criticism with grace.
4. Don’t use modern-day dialogue for historical dialogue. E.g., “wassup?”
5. Always begin your story with the end in mind, especially if you are a “pantser.”
6. Avoid big backstory dump. Release the character’s background a little at a time.
7. Show strong character motivation and conflict.
8. Use all the senses when writing a story.
9. Use stronger words, not more words.
10. If you are a woman writer, be aware of how men talk (fewer words).
