Cheyenne, Wyoming

The famous Frontier Days will be held July 19-28 this year. The town of 69,000 will be inundated with visitors that total more than their population. The rodeo has been part of Cheyenne’s history since 1899. Starting as a one-day event, it has now expanded to ten days of fun.

My family and I recently visited this beautiful town which is the capital of Wyoming. We were able to visit a dude ranch there and see all sorts of animals. The best part was that we were able to feed and pet bison from the safety of an open-air train built for the property. What an experience! See the pictures below.

Cheyenne has constant breezes in the summer, but in winter the harsh winds combined with snow can be rough. There are instances when I-25 and I-80 are closed.

Downtown has a wealth of history and many of the buildings have been restored (those that weren’t burned down in the past). Those who remember the movie “Tom Horn” starring Steve McQueen depicts a folk “hero” who was unjustly hung for murder. A story about one of the town’s church bells ringing on its own…well, every town must have some type of ghost story. We’re talking a steel bell that even Wyoming winds couldn’t move. There are loads of artwork and sculpting throughout downtown Cheyenne.

I’m sharing this for those of you who don’t travel much but want to hear about the West. Cheyenne, Wyoming is a beautiful place to visit, and the touch of the Old West still exists.
