WHAT ARE YOU WRITING?

by | Uncategorized | 0 comments

How many times have you bought or borrowed a book and put it down after the first few paragraphs or chapters? I have. The opening didn’t grab my attention.

If you’re a writer or just starting, establish momentum from the beginning. Do you know what a hook is? For authors, it’s the first line or paragraph that grabs the reader and makes them want to turn the page. Start with action, someone’s unusual thoughts, a description of another world, or immediate conflict.

For those of you interested in writing, find a legit writing group (do a little research). You can browse through Pinterest or YouTube for instructions on where to begin. WORD TO THE WISE: Don’t overload yourself with info so that you give up before you start. Find someone who writes at work, your church, or any organization you belong to and ask for his/her advice.

Find your genre: fantasy, sci-fi, mystery, romance, time travel, etc.

Use an outline if that works for you. There are many instructions on the internet on how to outline. If you aren’t an outline person, keep notes for your plot, characters, time, and setting.

I’m currently revising a “dusty” historical novella as my next book. I’m still working on characters, plot, and setting for the book after this one.

January and February are often “indoor” months. Pick up a good book to read or start your own. I’m here to encourage you, as I didn’t write fiction until after retirement.

If you found value in this article, I would love to hear from you, even if it’s a thumbs up.

You can find my latest book on Amazon (a good dual-romance in time for Valentine’s Day):

“Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.” 1 Jn 4:11 (NIV)

See you in March!
